Bejeweled 3 is not a reinvention of the addictive puzzle formula that has worked so well for the past decade. The game is still about matching three like-colored gems to remove them from a game board, and gameplay flourishes introduced in subsequent versions (like the ability to swap gems while pieces are still falling, or matching four or more gems at once to create explosive gems) are all present in this iteration. Rather than tweaking the established paradigm, Bejeweled 3 is developer PopCap's all-out attempt at building on the familiar by throwing as much new content at the wall as possible and seeing what sticks.
There are a grand total of eight ways to play Bejeweled 3, including a Quest mode that serves as a collection of 11 smaller game variants that aren't fleshed out enough to be considered their own separate game types. At the game's start, only four of the eight modes are available for play, and the remaining four must be unlocked by meeting certain in-game goals, like making it to level 5 in Classic mode (which is standard match-three Bejeweled) or by earning a score of 100,000 points or more in Lightning mode (a variant in which you score as many points as possible before running out of time.)
As is generally the case with such a diverse spread, some of the game's newer modes work better than others. Butterflies, for example, is an excellent addition that feels wholly unlike the standard Bejeweled experience. In it, you must stop multicolored butterflies from reaching the top of the screen where a hungry spider lays in wait. The butterflies enter the game board from the bottom of the screen, and each time you swap a gem they'll move up one space. By matching the butterflies with gems of their color or catching them in an explosion, you free the butterfly from the board and prevent them from being eaten. It's a particularly interesting and strategically deep twist, and I wound up putting more time into it than I did in Classic mode.On the other side of the equation you have unnecessary duds like Diamond Mine -- a mode that feels almost entirely luck-based -- or Ice Storm, which is like an annoying and strenuous version of Butterflies. The aforementioned Quest mode is also filled with game variants that seem better fitted to a mini-game collection than a high-profile release like Bejeweled 3, although most of them are fun enough in small doses.
One of the most advertised additions to the game is the endless Zen mode, which was apparently created with the help of scientists with expertise in the field of biofeedback. The purpose of Zen mode is to help players relax, and it uses a combination of ambient sound, positive messages, and even a breathing pattern that players are encouraged to imitate to inspire calm and peace of mind. I tried out a variety of the options that Zen mode offers, and although none of them made me feel particularly calm, the positive on-screen messages (including such truth bombs as "I have a destiny") did make me laugh. I'm willing to bet that plenty of people will love Zen mode, but it's a particular aspect of Bejeweled 3 that never really clicked with me.
Despite a hit-or-miss assortment of new and old modes, Bejeweled addicts are guaranteed to flock to this game in droves -- and why not? Classic mode is as delightfully addictive as ever, Lightning is a fun and frantic variant that fans of Bejeweled Blitz will find comfortably familiar, and a few of the more innovative additions, like Butterflies, add something new to the standard formula. Bejeweled 3 takes a few risks, and the result is essentially Bejeweled 2 plus a handful of both worthwhile and throwaway modes. If that's enough to warrant a purchase, however, is up to you.
